Brehm Preparatory School is a small, fully-accredited, not-for-profit coeducational boarding school for students with learning differences. Since 1982, Brehm has been successfully teaching Junior High and High School students with language-based and complex learning disabilities to "learn how to learn." Our family-style atmosphere is uniquely designed to foster independence and responsibility.

 

Position Summary:

Teachers must understand and believe in the Brehm Mission and be committed to fostering cooperation, communication and collaboration. Under the guidance of the Director of Educational Services, Teachers plan, implement, and assess instruction for assigned courses in accordance with individual student needs and the courses' scope and sequence. Teachers execute daily responsibilities of Advisement in which they manage the individualized programming for four to five students. Teachers directly participate in weekly team meetings, monthly departmental meetings, quarterly professional meetings with the Director of Educational Services, bi-annual parent conferences, yearly strategic plan, and other elected or determined meetings. Involvement in extracurricular activities and staff development is highly encouraged. 

 

Experience and Knowledge:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree with Certifcation in Special Education
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Courses and training specific to: area of instruction, assessment, characteristics of learning disabilities and method.
  • Training in risk management and health and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of policies, protocols, systems, and procedures established to enhance student programming
  • Ability to engage in interactive problem solving and decision making
  • Skillful negotiation and mediation skills in dealing with students, parents and supervisors
  • An awareness of their professional strengths and weaknesses to empower seeking or offering assistance and accepting and applying
  • feedback and challenges
  • Working knowledge of learning disabilities, learning styles, Brehm competencies, Bloom's taxonomy, State Standards, and the IEP
  • process
  • Training in remedial reading and writing techniques
  • Ability to apply teaching techniques and strategies to elicit desired student responses or behavior
  • Knowledge and application of behavioral and discipline management
  • Ability to model and engage in appropriate social skills

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Read and adhere to the policies and expectations set forth in the Policy and Procedure Manual
  • Read and adhere to the policies and expectation set forth in the Teacher Handbook
  • Attend from 8:00 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. on scheduled school days unless proper notification has been made and approved 
  • Create a structured, yet flexible, environment that promotes curiosity, creativity and learning
  • Demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism in daily encounters with students, staff, parents and the community at large 
  • Demonstrate positive attitude towards flexibility, creativity, collaboration, cooperation and communication
  • Create student profiles: review files, enter information on review and recommendations, and analyze and synthesize information to
  • make program recommendations and devise interventions on an on-going basis
  • Complete Brehm and District IEPs: coordinate and compile information from multiple sources and then communicate and/or
  • implement current levels of performance, related services, accommodations, transition plans, and goals and objectives
  • Design, maintain, and refine the scope and sequence for courses taught
  • Develop and implement lesson plans
  • Provide abundant opportunities for students to acquire information, communicate thoughts and use reasoning
  • Conduct on-going assessments of student progress and then adjust instruction in order to accommodate and meet student needs
  • Complete quarterly progress reports and assign semester grades
  • Administer, score and interpret Woodcock Johnson Testing and other standardized tests
  • Teach a variety of strategies and self-management skills
  • Supervise student behavior during class time, class transitions and extracurricular activities
  • Purchase classroom materials with proper clearance and then maintain and inventory materials
  • Oversee student assignment book, organizational skills, time-management skills, and general affect
  • Communicate bi-monthly, or as needed, with parents to update them on their child's academic progress
  • Communicate bi-monthly, or as needed, with Dorm Parents to update them on their student's academic progress
  • Actively pursue professional development through professional review, conferences, workshops, educational courses, readings, and
  • formal and informal assessment of instruction, professional goals, and effectiveness of interaction with student, parents, and
  • colleagues
  • Participate in scheduled meetings
  • Be an active and prepared member of the Team Process
  • Interface with all facets of program providing direct instructions: Speech and Language, Nursing, Dorm Parents, Recreational
  • Supervisors, Social Workers, and Psychologist
  • Participate in Parents' Weekends
  • Contribute to the Strategic Plan Process
  • Provide support for extracurricular activities
  • Work the Summer Program as required
  • Required to work 6 Saturdays per academic year 
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Position Available: August 2016

Supervises: Students, aides, university students and student teachers

Work Hours: Full-Time, 8:00 a.m. to 4:10 p.m.

Pay Type: Salary

Compensation: To be determined at time of hire and will be based upon experience and skills
