Brehm Preparatory School, Inc., currently has several open Dorm Parent positions for their Summer Program. Successful candidates will have excellent customer services skill, be able to participate in a wide variety of activities, detail oriented, have an outgoing nature, and must be outcome-oriented.

Position Overview:

Dorm Parents supervise a group of 10-16 students in a dormitory environment. Dorm Parents work directly with the students in a hands-on capacity while the students participate in various activities such as hiking, swimming, fishing, sports, canoeing, team building initiatives, building campfires, physical games, overnight camping, and other activities. Dorm Parents are supervised by the Summer Program Coordinator and work with other dorm parents, faculty, and recreation staff to accomplish the overall mission of the Summer Program by attending to the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of summer program participants.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly responsible for the health, happiness, and welfare of each student enrolled in the Summer Program
  • Provide guidance to students who are homesick or having other difficulties
  • Lead and participate in program activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, canoeing, swimming, team building initiatives, building campfires, physical games, overnight camping and activities in order to oversee and assist students
  • Communicate with parents by phone or email as instructed by the Summer Program Coordinator
  • Complete written reports as requested, documenting communication, issues, complaints, core behaviors, and resolutions
  • Maintain open communications through individual and group discussions, and meetings with staff
  • Participate in all required meetings of staff and use given communication systems during the Summer Program
  • Assist the Summer Program Coordinator with assigned dorm staff schedules to assure adequate coverage of dorms; Uphold agreed on schedule and discuss any proposed changes immediately with the Summer Program Coordinator
  • Facilitate recreation staff and counselors-in-training supervision
  • Represent the Summer Program in a professional manner; demonstrating good manners and behaviors; Set an example for students and staff by being prompt to meals, activities, and other duties
  • Support, uphold, and enforce all Brehm policies and procedures as they relate to staff and students
  • Show a general investment in Summer Program; Show enthusiasm and energy
  • Check each student's dorm room for cleanliness, safety, and hygiene and evaluate based on Summer Dorm Standards
  • To be constantly aware of the condition of facilities and grounds, setting an example by picking up trash, keeping the living area clean, cleaning up after yourself, and enforcing group cleanup
  • Clean and prepare dorms for the beginning of the Summer Program and participate in the final clean-up of all facilities
  • Read and respond to emails daily while working
  • Assume any other responsibilities deemed necessary by the Heads of School or the Summer Program Coordinator for the benefit of the Summer Program

Knowledge and Experience Requirements:

  • Boarding or residential experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of learning disabilities, learning styles, and life skill strategies
  • Knowledge of policies, protocols, systems, and procedures established to enhance student programming
  • Familiarity with child & adolescent development a plus
  • 2+ years of experience scheduling and organizing events with proper staffing
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience
  • Working knowledge of the greater Southern Illinois area
  • Knowledge of GSuites, a plus

Supervision of Others:

  • Supervise and train staff
  • Supervise students

Educational Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associates Degree or higher in a field related to Physical Fitness, Recreational Therapy, or similar, preferred

Working Hours and Conditions:

  • 40 hours per week with 5 overnights in the dorms required
  • Hours will vary between mornings, evenings and weekend based on the need of the Summer Program
  • Required to live-in dorms during the Summer Program
  • Travel away from home may be required

Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to pass a driving background check
  • Ability to pass a physical exam
  • Valid vehicle insurance

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Stamina for long working hours
  • Position is very active and may require frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, climbing and lifting
