Position Overview

Lead Assistant Dorm Parents assist the Dorm Parent in managing and supervising the daily responsibilities of running a dorm. They manage the dorm when the Dorm Parent is not present including supervising other staff. 

Lead Assistant Dorm Parents should be hard-working, organized, reliable and willing to go the extra mile to ensure the safety and well-being of the students in their care. Lead Assistant Dorm Parents must have the ability and skills to build a caring, friendly, and positive rapport with students, while, at the same time being able to deal appropriately with challenging welfare and discipline issues when required.   

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assisting in managing and supervising the daily responsibilities of running a dorm which include, but not limited to, chores, hygiene, personal care, study hall and free time supervision, meal preparations, implementing goals and documentation
  • Assisting the Dorm Parents in supervising the students, creating social situations that will enable student growth, modeling appropriate behavior, and creating a safe and nurturing environment for student development
  • With collaboration with the clinical team, assistant dorm parents work with the students to assist them in managing problems or conflicts related to their emotional/social growth
  • Participating in weekly all-staff meetings, dorm meetings, dorm training, and HEP reviews when required
  • Assist the Dorm Parents in communicating appropriate information on a daily basis to the appropriate party (clinical/administration)
  • Assisting with developing goals and reviewing goals with each student in their dorm
  • Assisting Dorm Parents in documenting the required paperwork

Minimum Education Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Experience

  • Knowledge in the area of learning differences, and an understanding of practices used to aid in helping them find success, problem-solving, and overall wellness is helpful

Working Conditions 

  • Dormitory Setting
  • 40 hours each week with the possibility of more hours based on availability and need
  • Hours will vary between mornings, evenings, weekends and special events
  • Required to work every other weekend
  • Travel away from home is optional

Immediate Supervisor  

  • Dorm Parent

Supervision of Others 

  • Supervises students
  • Supervises staff when required

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to meet the ISBE employment requirements including passing a background check, physical exam and TB test

Physical Demands 

  • The position is very active and may require frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, climbing and lifting
