Assistant Dorm Parent

Brehm Preparatory School, Inc., currently has openings for Assistant Dorm Parents. Successful candidates will have excellent customer services skill, flexibility, be student-centric, have an outgoing nature, and must be outcome-oriented.

Position Overview:

Assistant Dorm Parents should be hard-working, organized, reliable, and willing to go the extra mile to ensure the safety and well-being of the students in their care. Assistant Dorm Parents must have the ability and skills to build a caring, friendly, and positive rapport with students, while, at the same time being able to deal appropriately with challenging welfare and discipline issues when required.   

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in managing and supervising the daily responsibilities of running a dorm include, but are not limited to, chores, hygiene, personal care, study hall and free time supervision, meal preparations, implementing goals and documentation.
  • Assisting the Dorm Parent:
    • Supervising the students
    • Creating social situations that will enable student growth
    • Modeling appropriate behavior
    • Creating a safe and nurturing environment for student development
    • Develop, set, and review goals
    • Completing required paperwork
  • With collaboration with the Health & Wellbeing team, work with the students in managing problems or conflicts related to their emotional/social growth.
  • Participate in weekly all-staff meetings, dorm meetings, training, and HEP reviews
  • Communicate appropriate information on a daily basis to the appropriate persons/departments
  • Retrieve mail from the mailroom and pick up any student packages daily
  • Read and respond to emails when working
  • Follow check out procedures for vehicles
  • Communicate on-going information and/or issues with Dorm Parent
  • Participate and lead varies activities with students as assigned by the Recreational Coordinator
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong ability to multitask and flexible skillset
  • Strong desire to learn and work as part of a holistic team
  • Effective leadership skills to instruct, supervise, and motivate students
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the population and age group served
  • Possess a genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of our students
  • Ability to exhibit a mature, positive attitude
  • Ability to maintain a therapeutic, supportive stance with all constituents: students, parents, faculty, and staff
  • Knowledge in the area of learning differences
  • Understanding of practices used to aid students in their success, problem-solving, and overall wellness
  • Clear boundaries regarding role with students
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Knowledge of GSuites

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Experience Preferred:

  • Experience working with students
  • Conflict resolution and mediation experience
  • Residential/boarding/camp experience

Work Hours:  

  • Open availability to work an average of 30 waking hours per week and occasional overnights
  • Hours will vary between:
    • Mornings: 6:15 am to 9:30 am
    • Evenings: 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm
    • Overnights: 11:00 pm to 6:15 am
    • Weekends: Varies (8:00 am to 11:00 pm)
    • Some holidays

Working Conditions:

  • Mainly a dormitory setting

Travel:

  • No travel away from home required

Essential Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to meet the Illinois State Board of Education employment requirements including a background check, TB test, and physical exam
  • Valid Illinois driver's license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire strongly preferred
  • Ability to pass a driving record check strongly preferred
