Since 1982, Brehm Preparatory School, Inc. has empowered students with learning disabilities and differences to recognize and optimize their potential. Designed around the way each child learns best, an Individualized Holistic Education Plan (IHEP) integrates cognitive, academic, social, and behavioral strategies into a comprehensive program designed to educate the whole child.

Brehm's caring, highly qualified faculty and staff welcome students in grades 6 through 12+ into a dynamic new learning environment brimming with optimism. This holistic experience produces students with the tools, skills, and confidence to become effective self-advocates and independent learners able to succeed in school, find fulfilling careers, and lead balanced multi-faceted lives.

Brehm Preparatory School, Inc., currently has openings for Dorm Parents for the Fall of 2019. Successful candidates will have excellent customer services skill, flexibility, be student-centric, have an outgoing nature, and must be outcome-oriented.

Position Overview:

Dorm Parents are hard-working, organized, reliable and willing to go the extra mile to ensure the safety and well-being of the students in his/her care.  Dorm Parents must have the ability and skills to build a caring, friendly, and positive rapport with students, while, at the same time being able to deal appropriately with challenging welfare and discipline issues when required.   

Dorm Parents responsible to for the daily operation of a student dorm overseeing tasks related to personal care, social-emotional growth, dorm life, study hall, and weekend activities for students.  Dorm Parents are also responsible for supervising and training other staff.  To succeed as a Dorm Parent you will need to be able to maintain a patient, therapeutic stance in a loud and busy environment while communicating timely and effectively to peers and parents.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Emotional Development:

  • Create a safe environment where the student can work on their issues and practice new behaviors
  • Become familiar with each student's social history in an effort to understand the student as an individual
  • Develop a relationship with each student, actively listen to them and offer individual counseling and support
  • Develop and maintain an accepting empathetic relationship with student's family
  • Work closely with all constituents (parents, faculty, staff, and administers, etc.) to help the student achieve his/her goals

Social Development:

  • Empower students to practice self advocacy skills to ensure they all feel heard and can express themselves
  • Help students develop habits of proper behavior and safety at social and recreational activities
  • Teach students appropriate methods of building and enhancing interpersonal relationships
  • Work in collaboration with the Health & Wellbeing Department to assist students in managing problems and/or conflicts related to students' social growth

Intellectual Development:

  • Provide structured time each day to ensure students are on time for the beginning of the school day with all necessary books, paperwork, clothing, etc.
  • Assist students with homework and school projects, as needed
  • Work in close cooperation with the Academic Department
  • Encourage students to take advantage of extracurricular activities
  • Review student IEPs

 Goals and Discipline:

  • Complete, review, and update quarterly independent living goals for each student
  • Review goals with each student weekly
  • Teach students the Holistic model and consistently hold them accountable for the choices they make
  • Hold students accountable for following the Brehm Tier System
  • Immediately report serious offenses or incidents to appropriate parties via appropriate methods and reports

Daily Care and Operations:

  • Prepare and serve nutritionally balanced meals with students, as required
  • Ensure each student has appropriate shoes and clothes
  • Encourage the development of good personal hygiene habits such as bathing, brushing teeth, changing clothes, shampooing/conditioning hair, cleaning nails, etc.
  • Know any special health needs of students (i.e. allergic reaction to bee stings, medicines, foods, etc.)
  • Follow all medical protocol as instructed by nursing staff as it pertains to each individual student. This includes first aid, supervising the distribution of medication, caring for sick students, and completing medical reports
  • Review Travel Schedule to ensure students are properly prepared for any travel
  • Screen material brought in by students, specifically for contraband (i.e. sexually explicit material, pocket knife, lighter, drugs, alcohol etc.)
  • Ensure health and safety regulations are met in the dorm
  • Ensure the dorm is organized and welcoming for current students and parents as well as prospective students and parents
  • Retrieve mail from mailroom and pick up any student packages daily

 Communication and Reports

  • Participate and cooperate with all staff in caring for students
  • Responsible for completing, updating, and reviewing quarterly independent living goals for each student
  • Respond timely to all staff requests for information
  • Respond timely to all parent requests for information
  • Participate in all meetings such as weekly all-staff meetings, daily morning meetings, dorm meetings, and team meetings
  • Communicate in a timely, professional, and appropriately with parents on a bi-weekly basis to provide updates on student progress and incidents
  • Communicate appropriate information on a daily basis to the appropriate party (clinicians/administration/faculty/facilities) using the appropriate channels and tools
  • Submit maintenance and cleaning supply requests to Facilities, as needed
  • Complete a weekly inventory of kitchen supplies and groceries and submit orders to Food Services for only items needed
  • Read and respond to emails daily while working

 Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • Supervise assistants and tutors assigned to the dorm
  • Complete monthly dorm staff schedule
  • Review, correct and approve time cards
  • Complete performance evaluations
  • Participate and manage dorm training
  • Participate in emergency drills (i.e. fire, shooter, disaster drills)
  • Work with parents and co-workers to support each other with students needs and have a united stance

 Knowledge and Experience Requirements:

  • Boarding or residential experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of learning disabilities, learning styles, and life skill strategies
  • Knowledge of policies, protocols, systems, and procedures established to enhance student programming
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
  • Familiarity with child & adolescent development a plus
  • Knowledge of GSuites, a plus
  • Have knowledge in the area of learning differences, and an understanding of practices used to aid in helping them find success, problem solving, and overall wellness
  • Prior experience working with students
  • Conflict resolution and mediation experience

 Supervision of Others:

  • Supervise students

 Educational Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Pursuing a higher education degree in a human service, psychology, social work, speech and language, or educationally related field preferred

 Working Hours and Conditions

  • 10-29 hours per week with additional compensation for any overnight shifts worked
  • Hours will vary between mornings, evenings and weekend based on the need of the School
  • Travel away from home may be required
  • Holidays as required

 Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to pass a driving background check
  • Ability to pass a physical exam
  • Valid vehicle insurance

 Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Stamina for long working hours
  • The position is very active and may require frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, climbing and lifting
