Recreation Staff

Since 1982, Brehm Preparatory School, Inc. has empowered students with learning disabilities and differences to recognize and optimize their potential. Designed around the way each child learns best, an Individualized Holistic Education Plan (IHEP) integrates cognitive, academic, social, and behavioral strategies into a comprehensive program designed to educate the whole child.

This holistic experience produces students with the tools, skills, and confidence to become effective self-advocates and independent learners able to succeed in school, find fulfilling careers, and lead balanced multi-faceted lives.

Brehm Preparatory School, Inc., currently has several open Recreation Staff positions for Fall 2019.  Successful candidates will have excellent customer services skill, be able to participate in a wide variety of activities, detail-oriented, have an outgoing nature, and must be outcome-oriented.

Position Overview:

Recreation Staff works directly with the students in a hands-on capacity while the students participate in various activities such as bowling, hiking, swimming, fishing, sailing, shopping, exercising, movie viewing, video game playing, paintballing, arts and crafts, designing, talent showcasing, basketball, cooking, and playing music, etc. Recreation Staff is also responsible for the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of the students while they participate in the recreational activities.

The Recreation Program is designed to encourage students to participate in structured activities where they may learn a new skill, develop balance in their social interactions, increase self-esteem, gain new experiences, increase awareness of leisure resources, develop culturally and grow emotionally.

Recreation Staff is responsible for the implementation of Brehm's Recreation Program.  The Recreation Staff participates in the planning of recreation activities and is involved in DIRECT supervision of the weekday and weekend activities. The Recreation Staff helps the supervisor document and track the students' participation in weekday and weekend activities, and is responsible for seeing that all students are actively participating in recreation activities.

  • Participate in program activities which include, but are not limited to, bowling, hiking, swimming, fishing, sailing, shopping, exercising, movie viewing, video gaming, paintball, arts and crafts, designing, talent showcasing, basketball, cooking, music, attending pro sports games, and theme park trips.
  • Maintain open communications through individual and group discussions and meetings with staff
  • Uphold agreed schedule and discuss any proposed changes immediately with the Recreation Coordinator
  • Enforce safety standards in all areas of the School
  • Support, uphold, and enforce all School policies
  • Represent the School in a professional manner
  • Set an example for students by being prompt to meals, activities, and other duties
  • Demonstrate good manners and refraining from the use of profanity or other inappropriate behaviors
  • Complete written reports as requested, documenting communication, issues, complaints, core behaviors, and resolutions
  • Participate in all required meetings of staff and use given communication systems
  • Assume any other responsibilities deemed necessary by Administration for the benefit of the School
  • Show a general investment in the School
  • Show enthusiasm and energy throughout your employ
  • To be constantly aware of the condition of facilities and grounds, setting an example by picking up trash, keeping the living area clean, cleaning up after yourself, and enforcing group cleanup
  • Dress appropriately for the assigned activity
  • Read and respond to emails daily while working
  • Assume any other responsibilities deemed necessary by the Heads of School or the Department Director for the benefit of the School

 Knowledge and Experience Requirements:

  • Boarding or residential experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of learning disabilities, learning styles, and life skill strategies
  • Knowledge of policies, protocols, systems, and procedures established to enhance student programming
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
  • Familiarity with child & adolescent development a plus
  • Working knowledge of the greater Southern Illinois area
  • Knowledge of GSuites, a plus

 Educational Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associates Degree or higher in a field related to Physical Fitness, Recreational Therapy, or similar, preferred

Working Hours and Conditions

  • 10-29 hours per week with additional compensation for any overnight shifts worked
  • Hours will vary between mornings, evenings and weekend based on the need of the School
  • Travel away from home may be required

 Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to meet the Illinois State Board of Education employment requirements including a pass physical exam, TB test, and background check
  • Ability to pass a driving background check
  • Valid driver's license
  • Valid vehicle insurance

 Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • The position is very active and may require frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, climbing and lifting
