LIFE SKILLS AIDE

Position Summary:

Life Skills Aide is responsible for the direct one-on-one service to the students in the Extension Phase of OPTIONS.  This position fills the roles that directly support the goals and objectives tied to the life skills portion of the Extension Phase. This position requires staff to be flexible and able to use good judgment in the moment in order to facilitate optimal learning and progress for individual student growth and skill attainment.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement guided leisure program with students
    • Confirm that students are signed up for the appropriate amount of activities each week, proper forms are filled out, and corresponding documentation is completed
  • Assist in the weekly student implementation of menu planning, preparation and grocery shopping
    • Oversee the students are planning appropriate, nutritious meals into their weekly menu, noting progress and performance in the corresponding documents
  • Ensure that students in program maintain the appropriate standard of living by overseeing the implementation of systems to assist with cleaning and organizational tasks
  • Transport students to community programming, including grocery shopping and guided leisure activities
  • Evaluate student progress and performance in their apartment setting
    • Ensure that students are making adequate progress developing and utilizing systems, and acquiring life skills objectives
    • Document student progress and performance using given system (logs, computer notes, etc)
  • Read and respond to emails daily, while working
  • Complete administrative forms and tasks such as completely accurate time cards

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Working knowledge of GSuites and its applications
  • Ability to lead and engage in interactive problem solving
  • Ability to model and to teach age appropriate social skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to generate thorough and concise written documentation as it pertains to student progress and performance and/ or programming needs
  • Excellent time management and follow-through skills
  • Effective leadership skills to instruct, supervise, and motivate students
  • Ability to have and maintain clear boundaries with students
  • Ability to exhibit a mature, positive attitude

Experience and Knowledge:

  • 1+ years of experience as a direct service provider for young adults with learning disabilities and/or mental health issues
  • Knowledge in the area of learning disabilities
  • Knowledge of policies, protocols, systems and procedures established to enhance student programming

Education:

  • High School diploma, required
  • Actively working towards a degree in a social services field, preferred
  • Experience may be substituted for education

Essential Conditions of Employment:

  • A valid driver's license, or ability to obtain a valid driver's license within thirty days of hire
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to pass a driving background check
  • Maintain a clean driving record
  • Maintain a clean background check
  • Ability to become First Aid and CPR certified

Physical Demands:

This physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job and will vary based on the daily activities and varying recreational activities.  

  • Regularly sit, stand, bend down, crouch
  • Ability to drive a vehicle
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms
  • Frequently required to walk up stairs
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to care for and supervise students

Work Hours and Conditions:  

  • Ideal candidate will have open availability to work an average of 10 hours per week
  • Hours will vary primarily between weekdays and evenings and Saturdays
  • Will only work during the academic year when students are in session
  • Dormitory/Student Housing setting
  • Participation in recreational activities throughout Southern Illinois

Travel:

  • No travel away from home required

Supervision of Others:

  • Supervises students
  • Does not supervise staff

Position Status and Compensation:

  • Part-time
  • Hourly, Non-Exempt
  • Not benefits eligible
