Recreation Staff  Job Description

RATIONALE

The recreation program is designed to encourage students to participate in structured activities where they may learn a new skill, develop balance in their social interactions, increase self-esteem, gain new experiences, increase awareness of leisure resources, develop culturally and grow emotionally. Participation in recreation and leisure activities can be therapeutic in nature and is essential to our students in learning to structure and manage their free time. In some instances, our students may be hesitant to take healthy risk and try new things. In an attempt to address this issue, Brehm has an expectation requiring students to select and actively participate in recreational activities several times a week and at least one weekend recreation activity each weekend.

Job Responsibilities

The recreation staff (rec. worker) is responsible for the implementation of Brehm's recreation program. The recreation staff will participate in the planning of recreation activities, and is involved in DIRECT supervision of the weekday and weekend recreation activities. The recreation staff helps the supervisor document and track the students participation in weekday and weekend activities, and is responsible in seeing that all students are actively participating in recreation activities. Recreation staff are also responsible for attending daily staff meetings. Provided in the meetings are evaluations, feedback, scheduling of staff and ongoing in-services to staff. Inherent to the recreation staff position is an understanding of the student rules, tier system, school policies, and seeing that these rules and policies are being carried out within the recreation program. The recreation staff is responsible for all paperwork and follow up associated with the position (i.e. documenting staff hours for payroll, critical or behavioral incident reports, daily student activity sheets, medical incident reports, etc.)

The role of the recreation staff varies with respect to interactions with students. A recreation staff may find him/herself in an authority figure role, setting limits and expectations for the student, and later be in a counseling role, listening to problems or concerns that students may be  going through. Being able to effectively switch roles, matching them to the context of a given situation is an extremely important skill for the recreation staff. When working with students, this matching of roles is described as a therapeutic stance, and requires one to recognize how his/her interaction may result in the learning and  growth of our student body.

Recreation staff is expected to be punctual on their days of work. Recreation staff will be expected to work one weekend day or evening each weekend. Recreation staff is expected to be dressed appropriately for the activity they have been assigned to supervise.

GROUP ACTIVITIES

The recreation program will consist of daily planned group activities. Students will have a choice of several different activities from which to choose from.

INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITIES

In addition to the planned group activities, recreation staff will be working with students to help facilitate individual and small group activities. Brehm would like to encourage our kids and give them the opportunity to develop their own personal recreation and leisure. Some of the activities the student may chose to pursue include: horseback riding, yoga, Zumba, pottery classes, music lessons, jazz, dance, tennis, martial arts, etc.

INDEPENDENT RECREATION

Independent recreation involves the student identifying an alternate recreation (i.e. bike riding, library, Panera Bread etc. and must be accompanied by another Brehm student.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Special Activities may include concerts, plays, and some school trips.

WEEKEND RECREATION

Weekend recreation allows for bigger recreation activities such as: camping, trips to St. Louis Zoo, Six Flags, hiking trips, water parks, etc. Recreation staff will be providing other activities as well.
